Teaching Babies to Read With Free Printable Labels

Putting up labels around the house is an easy and fun way to teach your baby to read. There are a few ways you can do it. You can get some Post It Word Strips at your local office supply store. These are Post It pads with lines on them. You can write the words for items in the house and post the papers on items in the house. This is great for teaching words such as wall, door, bedroom, closet, dresser, refrigerator, etc... These are not going to be very durable and will be easy to remove, which is a good thing.

You can also go to our website through the link at the bottom of this article to get your free labels. On the home page, click on Freebies, and it will take you to 40 free printable labels of items in the home. You can print these on card stock or laminate them if you want them to be more durable.

Depending on your baby's age, they may even help you put them up around the house. If you don't want your home to look like a classroom, I suggest you do one room at a time. Periodically throughout the day, point out the words to your baby.

You can also play a game with your baby where you say good morning to the words or good night to the words before bed. This takes a few minutes and is an easy way to expose your child to words.

I know a mom that claims an elf comes in and mixes up all the labels when her child is sleeping. When he wakes up they go about setting them straight.

If you are looking at the labels regularly, you won't need to have them up for long. When you decide to take them down, you can use them as flash cards or you may want to put them in a book with images. You can even turn them into couplets by adding a color to each word, such as silver refrigerator. Just have fun and your baby will love to read the labels around the house.
